An uncirculated or non aerated pond or lake develops a thermocline. This is a stratification of the water by
temperature. The warmer water is at the surface in contact with the air and the cooler water drops to the bottom where
it becomes oxygen starved. Proper circulation and aeration will increase the amount of oxygen at all depths, and
break down the thermocline. Aerating a pond provides a healthier habitat for fish, reduces algae blooms, improves
water clarity and rids the pond of bad smells. Aeration also improves the effectiveness of bacterial products that
reduce nutrients and improve water clarity.
Airmax® aeration systems utilize a shore-mounted air pump that delivers air to specialized diffuser plates that are located on the pond bottom. The resulting column of rising bubbles circulates water throughout the pond, eliminating the thermocline. With a fresh supply of oxygen, natural bacteria and phytoplankton go to work in the water column as well as on the bottom. Any excess nutrients in the system are metabolized, resulting in cleaner, clearer water and less muck on the bottom. A mixed system also gives your fish a larger, healthier area to thrive in.
